The National Weather Service predicted a snow fall of 20-30 inches in the Capital Region and this time they were RIGHT. Snow starting falling on Friday evening 2/5/2010 and didn't quit until Saturday night 2/6/2010 with a total 26 inches. Station 11 units ran a total of 120 calls for all 6 units from 2/5/2010  07:00 - 2/6/10 at 23:59 hrs.

CONGRATULATION'S CAPTAIN GARRETT and CAPTAIN MASON

The members of Station 11 would like to congratulate Station Captain  William Garrett and Captain Glenn Mason on their recent promotions. Station Captain Garrett has been promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief and will be assigned to the 7th Battalion C Shift. Captain Glenn Mason has been promoted to Captain II Shift Commander at Fire Station 11, and will be assigned on A Shift.

With the promotion of Captain Mason this leaves an opening for a Shift Captain on B Shift, This will be filled by Captain Cory Matthews who was also recently promoted to the rank of Captain.

Congratulations to you all

FIRST DUE HIGH RISE

A Shift- At 19:57hrs units from the 6th Battalion and the City of Alexandria were dispatched to box 1192 at 5840 Cameron Run Terrace for fire reported from the 10th floor. Company 11 units arrived on scene and reported fire showing from the 10th floor  and requested a second alarm.

As units arrived and took there pre assigned assignment Rescue 11 located the fire in apartment 1011 forcing entry finding a vacant apartment with fire around the heating unit. Command (BFC406) had all second alarm units stage on the service road holding personal on there units. Rescue 11 reported fire knocked down with a water can and suggested holding to 2-1 . Once command received a report from the companies working above in apartment 1111 that they had no extension command held E411,205,T411,R411 releasing the rest of the first alarm and second alarm companies.

1st Alarm: E201,204,409,207,T411,R411A411,M409,EMS406,EMS402,BFC406,BFC212

2ND Alarm: E411,424,209,TL405,M204,LA437,CAN422,DFCO

*E411 was on an ALS call when this box was dispatched and was unable to clear until the 2nd alarm

B Shift -  At 16:32 hrs E411 was dispatched to fill  Prince Georges County MD, Oxon Hill Fire Station 821. While en route E411 was added to the box on the working fire dispatch. Units from Company 829 Silver Hill and surrounding Companies were on scene at 5705 Gloria Dr with a Bi-level single family house with heavy fire from side Charlie.  E411 arrived on scene and assisted in suppression operations. E411 operated on scene until 18:19 hrs when command released them.    


 
   
   
ENGINE AND TRUCK 411 ON 2ND ALARM BOX 3700

C Shift - At 13:02hrs Engine and Truck 411 were dispatched on the second alarm in box 3700. Units From the 5th Battalion and Fort Belvior FD, were on scene with a one story single family house with smoke showing from side Adam. As units operated on scene conditions started to deteriorate rapidly prompting command to request a second alarm. Engine and Truck 411 staged upon arrival. T411 was soon called to the scene and  assisted with opening up the fire room and checked for extension.  Units went back in service at 14:01hrs


 
RESCUE 411 EXTRICATES ONE FROM A VEHICAL ON ITS SIDE

B Shift - At 05:43 hrs units from the 6th Battalion were dispatched to Box 2400 in front of 4419 Old Mill Rd for the auto accident with entrapment. E424 (Lt Pittman) arrived on scene with a single vehicle accident on its side with one trapped. R411 (Lt Guza) arrived and positioned in front of E424 and stabilized the auto using the Par-A-Tech Struts and the side winch. With stabilization complete the crew removed the roof and assisted EMS crews in removing the pt to M424. Stabilization and extrication were completed in ten minutes from the arrival of R411.

A Shift - E411 and Truck 411 arrived on the scene and stood fast in staging for about 10 minutes. Upon request of command, eng/trk 11 were sent to the fire ground. Truck 11 threw 4 ladders on the rear of the structure and various other duties. Engine 11 positioned at the driveway and advanced the 400' line to the fire building. After knocking down the fire from the outside, Engine 411 advanced into 538 quadrant D to knock the remaining fire. The crew forced entry into the apartment and knocked numerous spot fires in the apartment and conducted a primary search. After 15 minutes of work, command pulled the units out and we went to rehab. We racked up and were released at 2030 hours.

B Shift - Engine 411 was alerted to fill Station 21. While crossing the Wilson Bridge, they were added on the call as First due engine on the third alarm. Engine 411 arrived in staging and were sent to work in the exposure building. Engine 411 along with E809 (Bladensburg) worked on knocking fire in a total of three apartments. Captain Mason and crew worked for a total of 45 minutes overhauling several apartments. After majority of the fire was darkened down, Command had the tower ladder sweep the entire cockloft area. Engine 411 worked another 20 minutes before being released from the fire ground.

Randy Schwartz takes Lead in Southern Maryland for Singer Associates

Please help us congratulate Technician Randy Schwartz FS11/C as he takes the lead to cover the Southern Maryland region for Singer Associates. Randy started with Singer Associates in May, 2005 as a roving Regional Account Manager. His assigned territory in Maryland will be Prince Georges, Charles, Calvert, Saint Mary’s Counties, and portions of Anne Arundel County, as well as a few counties on the Virginia side of the Rte. 301 Bridge. Randy has completed over 25 years of service with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, where he has served as an Apparatus Technician for the last 21 years. His prior volunteer service gives him a total of over 30 years of firefighting experience. He also has 25 years of fire apparatus sales experience starting with ambulances many years ago for Potomac Fire Equipment. For several years prior to joining Singer Associates, he ran his own Fire Apparatus Dealership, RK Schwartz and Associates, in Waldorf, MD. Randy looks forward to serving the Southern Maryland Region for Singer Associates with an exceptional service. His recent deliveries in the area include the Bladensburg VFD, Riverdale VFD, Tenth District VFD, and Hollywood VFD.

Firefighters Gather, Distribute Toys for Twelfth Year

Partnering with private corporations and local businesses, Fairfax County firefighters and paramedics have sponsored the Twelfth Annual Firefighters Holiday Rescuers Toy Drive, on Monday, December 14, 2009, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Penn Daw Fire and Rescue Station 11, 6624 Hulvey Terrace, Alexandria, Virginia.

Department members, the Progressive Firefighters of Fairfax County, Inc., and the Fairfax County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics, Local 2068, have been collecting toys, games, and other items to be distributed throughout Fairfax County.

Through generous donations and support from businesses and civic organizations including Promax Realtors, Wal-Mart, and the Rotary Club of Tysons Corner, this years event was a huge success. It is antisipated that thousands of school-aged children and their families will receive toys and gifts this holiday season.

The Fire and Rescue Department is coordinating with Fairfax County Public Schools and the Department of Family Services to reach a record number of children this year.
