2010 BACK PACK DRIVE

B Shift  - On Thursday, September 2, 2010 Fairfax County Department personnel, the Progressive Firefighters of Fairfax County, Inc., and the Fairfax County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics, Local 2068, held the annual backpack and school supplies drive at Fire and Rescue Station 11, Penn Daw.

Department personnel,  have been collecting backpacks and school supplies for several weeks and distribute them to school children in Fairfax County and the Washington Metropolitan Area. Through generous donations and support from area businesses, including Nationwide Credit Corporation, Promax Management, Inc., Rotary Club of Tysons Corner, and Aluminum Cans for Burned Children, over 1,000 backpacks were collected and filled with school supplies.

Firefighters coordinated the distribution of the backpacks to various Fairfax County public school administrators and local shelters. For more information on next years event, please contact Captain Willie Bailey at 703-246-3801.


 


 
   
   
FIRE SHOWING IN "OLD TOWN" FOR THE SQUAD AND TRUCK COMPANIES

- A Shift; Around 0400 hours, Squad 411 was alerted to 1050 North Royal Street (204) for the apartment fire. Engine 204 arrived on the scene with fire showing from the second floor of an middle unit townhouse. Initial crews found fire on a balcony and extension into the attic. Squad 411 (Captain Mason) and crew were assigned in an exposure unit to check for extension. Truck 411 (Second Alarm) arrived on the scene and handled lights and fans to the fire unit. They also assisted opening up the exposure unit. The fellows from the "Highway" operated for an hour, before returning to the County.


 
ENGINE TRUCK RESCUE ON TOWNHOUSE FIRE

C Shift ; At 10;08 companies from the 5th and 6th Battalion were dispatched to 7109 Pleasant Point  Ct fire box 3703 for a reported town house fire. E,T,R 411 arrived first due with a two story end unit town house with smoke showing from side Bravo. E411 (Lt Allen) stretched an 1 3/4 line to side Adam making entry to the first floor holding at the top of the basement stairs as the Rescue (Lt Jackson)  searched for the location of the fire. The third due engine reported that this was a non walk out basement and fire was now venting out the basement windows. E411 pushed down the stairs under high heat conditions and zero visibility knocking down the fire. T411 laddered and vented with TL405. E422 backed up E411 while E409 ran a line to Division one. With the fire knocked down and all searches negative Command held two Engines and two Trucks releasing the remainder of the first alarm assignment. 


 
   
   
AUTO ACCIDENT WITH FLY OUT

C Shift - At 16:44 hrs Rescue and Ambulance 411 was dispatched to the intersection of Richmond Hwy and Lockheed Blvd for an auto accident. R411 (Lt Straubinger) arrived on scene with a 3 vehicle accident with one child ejected. M411 was added to the call along with E411 for the LZ. The child was a passenger in the van and was ejected out the passenger rear window found lying between the van and a car. A409 was added for one green tag pt with an arm injury. The child was loaded into A411 and transported to the lz along with the crew from M411 and flown to the local trauma center. A409 transported their pt by ground to the trauma center.   


 
   
   
RESCUE TO ARLINGTON CO. TRUCK ON HOUSE FIRE PG BOX 821

C Shift - As  a severe thunder storm moved into the Capital Region companies from all over the area starting running. Communication centers from Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria City and Prince Georges County soon became over whelmed with the volume of calls coming in. At 16:03 hrs R411 was dispatched along with other county units to 2800 South Randolph St for a building collapse (6.6 mile response). R411 was placed in service as they turned onto the reported street. While in Arlington County R411 was dispatched to a couple more incidents including an auto accident on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. R411 responded from the G.W Parkway and the Regan National Airport but the response was cut short due to the Parkway being closed due to a large tree that had fallen over the south bound lanes. The return trip took about 2 hours to return back to quarters due to just about every route being blocked by down power lines or trees.

At 03:11 Truck 411 was dispatched on the 1st alarm to a 821 box in Prince Georges County Md as the 2nd due special service. T411 arrived right behind T832 (1st due special service) and was assigned to ladder side Charlie and Baker. The crew was then directed to Division two for the secondary search (negative). With the search complete the crew assisted with venting and opening up. T411 was released at  05:01. While working the fire E411,A411,T405 were moved to station 821 for coverage. The fill companies ran several calls including a box alarm. 


 
ENGINE, TRUCK AND SQUAD WORK AT KINGSTOWN TOWNHOUSE FIRE

Around 2015 hours, units from Company 411 were alerted to 5606 Pleasure Cove Court (Kingstown 37) for the townhouse on fire. Units from 437, 405 and 411 all arrived on the scene of a two story, middle of the row townhouse, with fire showing from two floors. Engines 405 and 437 stretched lines towards the front with Squad 411 gaining entry to the house. Engine 411 stretched a line to exposure "B: to stop any extension.

Squad 411 started in the front door and found most of the floor burnt through around the staircase. Engine 437 worked on knocking down the first floor from the doorway. Truck 411 threw ladders to the rear and completed a search of the basement. The Truck crew obtained a line from side "A" and knocked all visible fire in the basement and staircase to the first floor, before being pulled out of the house. With a couple lines in operation, majority of the fire was knocked with-in 15 minutes of arrival.

Company 411 cleared the scene around 2215 hours.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department fire investigators have charged Neil Benjamin Harrison, 28, Alexandria, with burning a townhouse and setting fire to woods, fences, and grass, in connection with a fire at 5206 Pleasure Cove Court, in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County.

Harrison was charged with 18.2-79, a class 4 felony, and 18.2-86, a class 6 felony of the Virginia code.


 
   
   
RIVER RESCUE

C Shift – At 11:46 hrs units from the 6th Battalion along with surrounding area fire boats from Alexandria City, PG County Md, Prince William County were dispatched to the Potomac river in the area of the Belle Haven Marnia  box 1191 for a missing kayaker. Multiple jurisdictions responded and coordinated a search for over eight hours, the search was called off due to diminished daylight and was resumed on the 1st at 7 a.m. On Sunday, August 1,  around 11:20 a.m., police divers located the body of the kayaker  The victim was located near Dyke Marsh about a mile south of the Belle Haven Marina.

The victim went missing around 11:46 a.m. while kayaking with a 19 year-old man on the river. The circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.

ENGINE ON PG COUNTY HOUSE FIRE

B Shift - Around 15:00 hrs E411(Capt Matthews)  was dispatched to fill Prince Georges County Md station 842 (Oxon Hill) while their units worked a house fire. While en route they were placed on the working fire task force sending the Engine to the scene. E411was assigned to assist with over haul.


 
RESCUE ASSIST ON AUTO ACCIDENT REPORTED ON FIRE WITH ENTRAPMENT

C Shift - At 03:44 Hrs R411 was dispatched with E405 and units from the City Of Alexandria  to the inner loop of the Capital Beltway prior to South Van Dorn for an auto accident reported on fire with entrapment. E405 (Capt Brandell) arrived on scene on the outer loop with an auto fully involved on the inner loop stretching an 1 3/4 line. R411 (Lt Urps) arrived and the crew Split and assisted the Medic units with two red tag pt's and one yellow tag pt,  that had been removed from the car prior to the arrival of the FD. E405 knocked down the fire and reported that there was no entrapment.  E207 arrived and closed the inner loop to traffic and checked on one auto that was involved in a previous accident prior to this incident. All three Pt 's were ground transported to the local Trauma Hospital M405,M207,M422.

RESCUE ASSIST WITH ONE TRAPPED

C Shift - AT 12:50 HRS Rescue 411 was dispatched along with other 6th Battalion units to box 0939 at the intersection of Fort Hunt Rd and Elkins Street for an auto accident with on reported trapped. E409 (Capt Norris) arrived on scene with on auto on its roof confirming entrapment. R411 (Lt Urps) arrived on scene and stabilized the vehicle and removed both doors and the B post on the drivers side. The Pt was packaged and transported to the local Trauma Center by M409.
